Experimenting – towards learning
This is the beginning of my writing a weekly blog – let’s see how this goes!
Back in the depths of 2012 I said that I would write a bit about experimentation in design. I think that this is a very important component of all design. When painting, decorating or creating anything outright copying is just not where it’s at for me. I would rather be free to try different things – colours, textures, layouts etc. and enjoy the evolution of my efforts. The biggest hurdle with this approach is FEAR – so silly but always lurking, ready to pounce and put a halt to the creative process. Fear of canvas, wood, metal, beads, furniture, paint? See what I mean? So, so silly.
Really the experimental approach is about enjoying the creative process. Although failure is difficult to accept it is just a part of this process – we learn a lot by failing. What does not work can be added to our knowledge storehouse helping us to work towards what does work.
So keep going. Ditch that canvas if you have to, try another colour of paint on your wall, give that offending piece of furniture to someone else. I think that it is so much fun to experience variety in everything that surrounds us.
