The price of art

Some of the ugliest “art” that I have ever seen is currently in the home décor stores in my neighbourhood. How can anyone buy this stuff? Horrible finishes, compositions and colours. I don’t care how cheap or expensive it is. It’s “awfulness” defies words!  But what is really sad is that none of it is original art. What you see has perhaps been duplicated thousands of times.

Of course I would like people to buy my paintings instead. But if you are not a fan of my style then at least consider buying an original piece in a style that you do like. There are many art shows and art galleries in a city such as Ottawa. Surprisingly though, even small communities often have an active art scene. As the weather warms (in Ottawa we are asking if this will ever happen this year) outdoor shows are especially prevalent and often there is no admission charge – free art appreciation!

Now let’s talk about price. If you are buying an original piece from a lesser- known artist you may pay what I would consider to be a very reasonable price – say around $100 for something little and somewhat more – into the hundreds for larger pieces. If the artist is well known and particularly if that artist is exhibiting in a gallery then the price will be higher still – perhaps $1000 and more.  No matter what your budget, though, there is an artist out there somewhere who has created something special that will “grab” you. What better way to express your individuality than to own a unique piece of art?

Really original art is “priceless”.

    Marie,

I couldn’t agree more. The home decor stores really should consider selling more tasteful pieces, instead of that replicated junk. There is nothing more thrilling than to find a fabulous piece of artwork that, as you say, really grabs you. I had an Uncle who painted beautiful landscapes, stunning architectural work, among other fine pieces all his life and my walls are now decorated with some of his best. I look at these paintings very regularly and still appreciate each delicate brush stroke, and the choice of colour and texture. There is no way I could ever feel that way about the off the wall junk that is retailing as ‘art’ currently.

P.S. I really enjoyed your paintings and the appropriateness of the titles. They spoke to me!
